Lyte, H. C. Maxwell [Sir Henry Churchill Maxwell Lyte (or Maxwell-Lyte) KCB, FBA (29 May 1848 - 28 October 1940) was an English historian and archivist. He served as Deputy Keeper of the Public Records from 1886 to 1926, and was the author of numerous books including this book A History of Eton College]. Illustrations by P. H. Delamotte and a Steel Engraving by C. H. Jeens, etc.

Thick 8vo. 9'' x 6¼''. Contains [xx] + 4; 527 pages with 8 pages of Supplemental Notes, illustrations by P. H. Delamotte, a steel engraving by C. H. Jeens, etc. 4 colour plates and many wood engravings to the text, includes a colour fold out plan of Eton, errata note tipped-in. Sir Henry Churchill Maxwell Lyte was educated at Eton 1861-1865 (The Reverend Francis Furse Vidal's House). Spine sun faded, text block clean and white and in Very Good sound condition. Loosely inserted typed letter headed July 1914 and typed subsequently: 'In July 1914 I reached the ante-final of the Junior Sculling. I passed the winning post first and naturally concluded that I had got into the final. Second edition hard back binding in publisher's original grey paper covered boards, black title and author lettering to the spine and to the front cover. 8vo. 8½'' x 5½''. Contains [xvi] 125 printed pages of text with 22 full-page monochrome photographs throughout, first edition was published without plates. In 1916 Crossley enrolled at Eton College (Edward Wellington's Stone's House) until 1922, completing his education at Magdalen College, Oxford. His flair for writing both poetry and prose led to his becoming a partner in the publishing house of Christopher's from 1928 to 1935, he died, aged 36, when the aircraft in which was travelling crashed into the sea off the Danish coast on 15 August 1939. External splitting of the paper to the front joint, the hinge remains sound and tight, foxing to the end papers, ink name inside 'M. F. Kemp, 1937' and in Very Good condition, no dust wrapper as issued. Member of the P.B.F.A.

The Reverend Walter Delmar Lindley, fifth son of Robert Charles Lindley by his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Charles Delmar.
