Richard joined the American Field Service, May 5, 1917 and was attached to Transport Section 526 on September 5, 1917. Enlisted with the U. S. Aviation and trained in France. He was commissioned First Lieutenant in December and attached to the 95th Aero Squadron, he was killed in action on May 17, 1918, near Toul, a department in north-eastern France. Frank Luke was the first airman to receive the Medal of Honor. Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, a U.S. Air Force pilot training installation since World War II, is named in his honour.
