Kita Ikki and the Making of Modern Japan | A Vision of Empire

Tankha, Brij

(Book #ID 86710)

Published by Global Oriental Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2006. 2006.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original burgundy cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Contains [xvi] 272 printed pages of text. This important new study of Kita Ikki, one of Japan's influential pre-war idealogues, focuses on the twin poles of nationalism and socialism that inform his three principal works, located always in the context of the dominance of Western imperialism at that time. The three works are 'The National Polity and Pure Socialism'(Kokutairon oyobi junsei shakai shugi), in which he explores the nature of the modern Japanese state and its characteristics, 'The Unofficial History of the Chinese Revolution' (Shina kakumei gaishi), written to correct what he perceived as Japan's misguided policy towards China, and 'The Fundamental Principles for the Reorganization of Japan' (Nihon kaizo hoan taiko), which was said to have influenced the young army officers of the Imperial Way Faction who attempted the 26 February 1936 coup to bring about direct imperial rule. The coup failed and Kita was executed the following year for his involvement as the so-called intellectual inspiration. The second half of the book contains the first complete English translation (by Brij Tankha) of 'The Fundamental Principles for the Reorganization of Japan', providing the reader with an opportunity to hear the voice of an early twentieth-century Japanese intellectual confronting the challenge of the West's domination and its implications for Japan; in so doing Kita helped galvanize support for an agenda involving Japan's own imperial mission and the pathway to a new Japan.             Hirohito | The Showa Emperor in War and Peace

Ikuhiko Hata [Hirohito (April 1901 - 7 January 1989) was the 124th Emperor of Japan according to the traditional order of succession, reigning from 25 December 1926, until his death on 7 January 1989. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Akihito. In Japan, reigning emperors are known simply as 'the Emperor' and he is now referred to primarily by his posthumous name, Showa, which is the name of the era coinciding with his reign; for this reason, he is also known as the 'Showa Emperor' or 'Emperor Showa']. Edited by Marius B. Jansen.

(Book #ID 82772)

Published by Global Oriental Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2007. 2007.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original grey cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 5½''. Contains [xxviii] 272 printed pages of text. This is a most important new work on Emperor Hirohito by one of Japan's leading historians, Ikuhiko Hata. Following the untimely death of Marius B. Jansen (Emeritus Professor, University of Princeton) in December 2000, who had been actively collaborating with the author and translator of the original Japanese edition ("Hirohito Tenno itsutsu no ketsudan", first published in 1987 and republished in 1994), it was inevitable that there would be a delay in publication of the English edition, which is finally now available. In his extended Foreword as editor, referring to the nature of Hirohito's power, Jansen states: 'We are left with puzzles that will probably never be resolved. Clearly, as Professor Hata and others have shown, the Emperor Hirohito had immense power, but the condition of retaining it was judicious restraint in exercising it'. In offering a view on the merits of Hata's research, Jansen points to the hitherto unknown plots (in parallel but unrelated) by both the Army and Navy to preserve, and if necessary resuscitate, the imperial line in the event the victors decided to depose Hirohito. Jansen also points to the merits of Hata's particular focus on the contribution Hirohito made to Japan in its post-war relations with the United States. Jansen added substantive notes to help place the author's material in historical and historiographical perspective. The book, which is not a biography or a general history of the Showa era, focuses on five decisions taken by Emperor Hirohito, which the author considers the key turning points of his reign: these concern the 26 February 1936 insurrection of young army officers, the termination of the Pacific War, the post-war constitution, the issue of abdication and the San Francisco Peace Treaty.             Deadly Dialectics | Sex, Violence, and Nihilism in the World of Yukio Mishima [Japan Library]

Starrs, Roy [University of Otago] Yukio Mishima (January 14, 1925 - November 25, 1970), born Kimitake Hiraoka, was a Japanese author, poet, playwright, actor, model, Shintoist, nationalist, and founder of the Tatenokai, an unarmed civilian militia.

(Book #ID 108177)

Published by Japan Library 35 The Crescent, Sandgate, Folkestone First Edition 1994. 1994.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original burgundy cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9½'' x 6''. Contains 225 pp with monochrome photograph of Yukio Mishima who is considered one of the most important Japanese authors of the 20th century. He was considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968, but the award went to his countryman and benefactor Yasunari Kawabata. Although Mishima's main literary ambition was to write philosophical novels in the tradition of Goethe and Thomas Mann, Deadly Dialectics is the first critical study to take this objective seriously: it also provides the first adequate account of Mishima's intellectual background and characteristic modes of thought and it is the first book to show the intimate and integral relation between his thought and his psychology and militant politics - or, more specifically, between his nihilism, his sexuality and his propensity to violence. On November 25, 1970, Mishima and four members of his militia entered a military base in central Tokyo, took its commandant hostage, and tried to inspire the Japan Self-Defense Forces to rise up and overthrow Japan's 1947 Constitution, which he called 'a constitution of defeat'. When his attempt failed, he committed seppuku (suicide). Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, unused and unopened new book. We carry this book in stock for immediate dispatch.             Japanese Propaganda: Selected Readings Series 1: Books 1872-1943 A Collection in Ten Volumes [10 Volumes Complete]

O'Connor, Peter [Series Editor] Musashino University, Tokyo

(Book #ID 85536)

Published by Global Oriental, Folkestone, Kent First Thus Edition 2004. 10 Volumes. Folkestone 2004.

Uniform matching first edition hard back binding in publisher's original scarlet covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spines. Quarto 10'' x 7''. Given today's heightened interest in the role and processes of propaganda in global realpolitik, the arrival of this first major collection of English-language writings on Japan and international ambitions in the modern period - a source long neglected by historians and social scientists alike - is both timely and relevant. Most books on Japan published in English between Meiji and the Pacific War can be divided between those with an explanatory purpose and those with a more critical focus. In the West, in the early years of the 20th century, explanatory books and fiction on Japan, especially those by Japanese authors, enjoyed a wide readership. A number of these explanatory volumes were propagandist in intent and by definition. However, as books about Japan with a more Western outlook came into vogue, the earlier volumes were gradually superseded by new works, written by Western writers and journalists, many of whom were subsidized by the Japanese government. In 1921, on the eve of the Washington Conference, Japan established a propaganda bureau within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and contracted with Western authors based in East Asia and elsewhere to support and contribute to her international agenda. A selection of the fruits of these and earlier endeavours has been brought together in this collection. Japanese Propaganda - Selected Readings stands as a record of Japan s responses to international criticism and of her sustained effort to win international favour during the stormiest years of her modern history. With a foreword from Uchikawa Yoshimi, the dean of Japanese media historians, a comprehensive introduction by Series Editor, Peter O'Connor, and scholarly introductions to each volume, Japanese Propaganda - Selected Readings provides a rich resource for all students of Japan's modern drive for international acceptance, and of her pre-war retreat into national victimhood and institutionalized mysticism.             Culture And Power in Germany And Japan: The Spirit of Renewal

Jorgensen, Nils-Johan

(Book #ID 97316)

Published by Global Oriental, Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2006. 2006.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original black cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Contains [xiii] 304 printed pages of text. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, unused and unopened new book. Based in part on the author's first-hand experience during his diplomatic postings to Tokyo and Bonn (1984-93), and supported by significant primary research, this parallel study of the post-war resurrection of two defeated nations provides a striking new and insightful analysis into the nature of Germany and Japan s recovery highlighting in particular the shared cultural, linguistic, moral and technological factors that were essential for this phoenix phenomenon to take place. Indeed, it is his in-depth investigation into the shared philosophical tradition of renewal, preserved and promoted even in defeat and annihilation, which underpins the originality of the research, which will be widely welcomed at many academic and political levels. At the same time, the reader is systematically challenged to reassess previously-held positions and opinions as each topic is addressed from notions of harmony, the emperor and renewal in Japan to the concept of wieder (renewal), nation and identity in Germany. And whatever shared opinions may or may not emerge, the reader will be in no doubt that Culture and Power in Germany and Japan is the work of an original mind that has managed to bring together an extraordinarily interesting tapestry of facts, themes and thoroughfares that together make a most valuable new contribution to Japanese-German studies.
