The achievement of the Masada excavations, represented in this exhibition, was an archaeological milestone, it was arguably the most famous archaeological dig of the 20th century after the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. During the early 1960s, Israeli archaeologists working on Masada, an ancient fortress which towers over the Dead Sea, unearthed what had been Herod the Great's winter retreat (73-4 BC). Items revealed included wall paintings, scrolls and a sophisticated water collection system. Contains 66 monochrome archive photographs throughout. In Very Good condition, no dust wrapper as issued.
