The First History of Dundee 1776

Millar, A. H. [Chief Librarian Albert Institute, Dundee]

(Book #ID 17111)

David Winter & Son, Dundee First thus edition 1923. 1923.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original royal blue cloth covers, gilt lettering to spine. 8vo 8" x 6" xxviii, 270, 2 [page]. Monochrome frontispiece, fold-out map to rear 14½" x 19¾". Special interest is attached to this volume, since it is, so far as known, the earliest attempt to write a consecutive History of Dundee. The manuscript was acquired in 1914 for the Dundee Free Library Committee at the sale of other articles belonging to a well-known Dundee collector, Mr James Falconer, and an examination of the contents showed that it was a document of unique value. The date is plainly set forth at the conclusion of the first part of the work, where the writer declares as follows:- "Thus have I wrote all as I yet find remarkable relating to the place. Dundee, 23rd December, 1775." Former neat ink message to the front free end paper, light foxing to closed page edges, tiny rubs to corners and tips and in Very Good condition. Scarce.             Land, Faith and the Crofting Community | Christianity and Social Criticism in the Highlands of Scotland 1843-1893 (Number 14 Scottish Historical Review Monographs Series) [Signed]

MacColl, Allan W.

(Book #ID 103376)

Published by Edinburgh University Press 22 George Street, Edinburgh First Edition 2006. 2006.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original black cloth covers, gilt stamped title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9½'' x 6¼''. This book probes the deep-rooted links between the land, the people and the religious culture of the Scottish Highlands and Islands in the nineteenth century. The responses of the clergy to the social crisis which enveloped the region have often been characterised as a mixture of callous indifference, cowering deference or fatalistic passivity. Allan MacColl's pioneering research challenges such stereotypical representations of Highland ministers head-on. Land, Faith and the Crofting Community is the first full-scale examination of Christian social teaching in the nineteenth-century Gaidhealtachd and addresses a major gap in the historical understanding of Gaelic society. Seeking to lay bare the existing myths by a wide-ranging analysis of all the denominational, theological and social factors at play, this study boldly overturns the received scholarly and popular interpretations. A ground breaking work, it explores a substantial but under-utilised field of evidence and questions whether or not Highland Christians - both clergy and laity - were committed to land reform as an engine of social improvement and conciliation. The Christian contribution to the development of a distinctively Highland identity - which found expression during the Crofters' War of the 1880s - is delineated, while wider links between theology and social philosophy are examined from beyond the perspective of the Highlands. Contains (viii), 240 pp. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper. SIGNED by the author to the front free end paper 'To Rosemary Stevens - With kindest regards - Allan MacColl - Proverbs 10:7'. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection.             Kintyre | The Hidden Past [Signed]

Martin, Angus

(Book #ID 98238)

Published by John Donald Ltd., 138 St. Stephen Street, Edinburgh First Edition 1984. 1984.

First edition in publisher's original colour illustrated stiff card wrap covers [soft back]. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. This social history of the 'ordinary' people of the south-western peninsula of Argyll, in western Scotland, has become a classic since this original publication in 1984. The greater part of the book is based on original research from a wide range of sources, from nineteenth century registers of the poor to material passed on through the oral tradition. Angus Martin traces the evolution of the extraordinarily mixed stock of Kintyre from the Gaelic settlement in the fifth century AD through the subsequent settlements of the Lowlanders and Irish, and explores the nature of these diverse cultural legacies. The darker aspects of social history - epidemic diseases, sanitary and housing conditions and destitution - are also explored, and the sinister activities of grave-robbers in nineteenth century Kintyre are substantiated for the first time. There is also information on Irish immigrant families, the Anglicisation of native surnames and surviving Gaelic elements in the local dialect. Contains 232 printed pages of text with two monochrome maps. Spine slant with thin crease line down the spine and in Very Good condition, no dust wrapper as issued. SIGNED by the author with blue biro to the half-title page 'With good wishes to Alan McGleshan - Angus Martin, Campbeltown, 16th December 1984'. Member of the P.B.F.A. ISBN 0859761193
