On a Bastion of London Wall | Or, Excavations in Camomile Street, Bishopsgate

Price, John Edward

(Book #ID 101511)

Printed by J. B. Nichols and Sons and Sons, 25 Parliament Street, Westminster, London First Edition 1880. 1880.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original quarter dark brown calf, deep blue pebble cloth sides, gilt and red morocco title label to the spine. 4to. 11'' x 9''. Contains pp. title + ii + 3-95 + [1], 8 plates of which there are lithographs, the remainder engraved, numerous woodcut illustrations through the text. Excavations within the vicinity of Camomile Street, Bishopsgate were initiated in 1876 and the findings published in the present volume four years later by the author, a member of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society. While removing the foundations of the City Wall a late 4th century semi-circular Roman bastion was discovered, partially composed of a number of architectural and sculptural fragments dating from the Roman occupation. Among these were a sculpted figure of a Roman soldier dressed in first century style. Price discusses at length the nature of the find and illustrates a possible reconstruction of the sculpture within an architectural frame, similar to monuments found at York and Colchester. In the same area a relief-carved figure of a lion was unearthed and the author discusses this at great length within the context of the cult of Mithras. These two fragments along with a colossal bearded head are now in the Museum of London. Slight fading down the spine, minor spotting to the rear end paper and in Very Good clean and original condition. Member of the P.B.F.A.
