Deadly Dialectics | Sex, Violence, and Nihilism in the World of Yukio Mishima [Japan Library] Starrs, Roy [University of Otago] Yukio Mishima (January 14, 1925 - November 25, 1970), born Kimitake Hiraoka, was a Japanese author, poet, playwright, actor, model, Shintoist, nationalist, and founder of the Tatenokai, an unarmed civilian militia. (Book #ID 108177) Published by Japan Library 35 The Crescent, Sandgate, Folkestone First Edition 1994. 1994. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original burgundy cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9½'' x 6''. Contains 225 pp with monochrome photograph of Yukio Mishima who is considered one of the most important Japanese authors of the 20th century. He was considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968, but the award went to his countryman and benefactor Yasunari Kawabata. Although Mishima's main literary ambition was to write philosophical novels in the tradition of Goethe and Thomas Mann, Deadly Dialectics is the first critical study to take this objective seriously: it also provides the first adequate account of Mishima's intellectual background and characteristic modes of thought and it is the first book to show the intimate and integral relation between his thought and his psychology and militant politics - or, more specifically, between his nihilism, his sexuality and his propensity to violence. On November 25, 1970, Mishima and four members of his militia entered a military base in central Tokyo, took its commandant hostage, and tried to inspire the Japan Self-Defense Forces to rise up and overthrow Japan's 1947 Constitution, which he called 'a constitution of defeat'. When his attempt failed, he committed seppuku (suicide). Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, unused and unopened new book. We carry this book in stock for immediate dispatch. Reporting the Russo-Japanese War,1904-5 | Lionel James's First Wireless Transmission to ''The Times'' Slattery, Peter [Lionel James] (Book #ID 87018) Published by Global Oriental Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2004. 2004. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original green cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 5½''. Contains [xvi] 144 printed pages of text with monochrome photographs. Lionel James's First Wireless Transmission to the "Times", Peter Slattery, Large numbers of British military and naval officers as well as journalists and others observed the Russo-Japanese War from close quarters. But there was one journalist in particular, the "Times"' correspondent, Lionel James, who made war-reporting history by gaining access to the conflict zone of the war at sea and reporting by wireless from a specially chartered ship as the action happened. The full details of this remarkable and highly dangerous exploit have been carefully pieced together from official "Times" records and other sources by Peter Slattery and recorded here for the first time, including the story of how the vital 180-foot timber wireless mast was built on the British-leased tree-less promontory of Weihaiwei on the China coast. James' first report was published in "The Times" on 15 March 1904; he subsequently went on to file many other dispatches, including the sinking of the Russian flag-ship the Petropavlovsk. The World Powers, however, were not ready to accept that a mere journalist should be allowed to exploit the new wireless technology to gain reporting advantage and forced James to give up, causing him to move inland into Manchuria to continue his reporting of the war. From there, he was to send a 5000-word story on one of the major land battles of the war at Liaoyang - the longest cable ever filed. There was also the matter of James' special deal with the Japanese Imperial Navy, which only now has come to light. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, unused and unopened new book.
