Letters From Moscow | Number 7

Cadbury, L. J. [Laurence John Cadbury (1889-1982), succeeded his brother Edward as head of the chocolate company in 1944].

(Book #ID 97250)

Published and Printed for Private Circulation, Bemrose, Derbyshire circa 1941. 1941.

First edition in original plain cream card wrap covers [soft back], black title lettering to the front cover, yellow braid cord securing tie. 8vo. 9½'' x 6''. In 1941 Laurence Cadbury visited the Soviet Union as a part of an economic mission. He wrote extensively about his travels and produced this booklet of his letters for private circulation upon his return to Birmingham. Laurence's tone in the letters is fairly upbeat, especially in his earlier writings. However, unpublished extracts show that he was less optimistic than he appeared. These extracts taken from those letters (June - September 1941) contain descriptions of Moscow and its population, the preparations for German air raids and the damage they caused, OGPU surveillance, and the negotiations with the Soviet government. Contains 26 (+ covers) printed pages of text with small monochrome photographs throughout. Light soiling to the covers and in Good condition, no dust wrapper as issued. Member of the P.B.F.A.

The Soviet Union in the Horn of Africa | The Diplomacy of Intervention and Disengagement (Cambridge Russian, Soviet and East European Studies Series Number 71) (Signed)

Patman, Robert G. [Editor of the Journal Third World in Soviet Perspective]

(Book #ID 109988)

Published by Cambridge at the University Press First Edition 1990. 1990.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original nutmeg and black tonic cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back. 8vo. 9½'' x 6¼''. This is an attempt to address the paradoxes of Soviet behaviour in the Horn of Africa. Dr Patman, editor of the journal Third World in Soviet Perspective, traces the impact of history, superpower relationships and competition on Soviet perceptions and motives. Dr Patman provides a careful historical background to the recent conflicts and shows how the Soviet Union and its East European partners dramatically switched from being close allies of Somalia to allies of Ethiopia and then intervened in the Ethiopian-Somali war of 1977-8 to ensure the military defeat of their former ally. However, he does not confine himself simply to retrospective analysis. He also assesses the Soviet experience in the region in the period since 1978, and considers in particular the impact of Gorbachev's thinking and the new diplomacy. The Soviet Union in the Horn of Africa provides the most detailed examination yet of Soviet policy. Contains (xvii) [blank], 411 pp with 6 maps and 14 tables. Fine condition book in Very Good condition dust wrapper with small crinkles of the paper to the spine ends. SIGNED message by the author to the front free end paper 'To Peter, Many thanks for your invaluable help and advice with the briefing. With best wishes, Bob - 19th June, 1990.'
