The First History of Dundee 1776 Millar, A. H. [Chief Librarian Albert Institute, Dundee] (Book #ID 17111) David Winter & Son, Dundee First thus edition 1923. 1923. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original royal blue cloth covers, gilt lettering to spine. 8vo 8" x 6" xxviii, 270, 2 [page]. Monochrome frontispiece, fold-out map to rear 14½" x 19¾". Special interest is attached to this volume, since it is, so far as known, the earliest attempt to write a consecutive History of Dundee. The manuscript was acquired in 1914 for the Dundee Free Library Committee at the sale of other articles belonging to a well-known Dundee collector, Mr James Falconer, and an examination of the contents showed that it was a document of unique value. The date is plainly set forth at the conclusion of the first part of the work, where the writer declares as follows:- "Thus have I wrote all as I yet find remarkable relating to the place. Dundee, 23rd December, 1775." Former neat ink message to the front free end paper, light foxing to closed page edges, tiny rubs to corners and tips and in Very Good condition. Scarce.
