Escritos completos sobre Velázquez [Complete Writings on Velázquez] Brown, Jonathan [Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez; baptized June 6, 1599 - August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV and one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age]. With an introductory essay by Bonaventura Bassegoda, and an epilogue by Lisa Banner. (Book #ID 99532) Published by Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica, Spain, First Edition 2008. 2008. First edition in publisher's original colour illustrated stiff deep French flap card wrap covers [soft back]. Quarto. 10½'' x 7¼''. This book brings together 32 texts about Velázquez that appeared between 1964 and 2006 in academic publications, exhibition catalogues, newspapers and general magazines. A good number of them are published here in Spanish for the first time. The set is the result of Jonathan Brown's long dedication to the life and works of the great Spanish painter, and also collects his opinions on many of the attempts to solve the mysteries that arise from the paintings of this enigmatic artist. All these issues are addressed in the last of the essays, "Velázquez, today and tomorrow," unpublished so far. There are two issues that give unity to the set of essays. Velázquez was a painter of the court of Felipe IV, and the changing relationship he maintained with the monarch is the framework in which the artist's career has to be interpreted. The central element of this relationship is Las Meninas, to which Brown dedicates two long essays: the classic one "On the meaning of Las Meninas" (1978) and "Las Meninas as masterpiece" (1999). The second theme is the question of the attributions and the related problem of the innovative technique of the artist. Velázquez was not a prolific painter. Since most of his safe works are in museums today, and as the price of large paintings continues to break records, determining what new works are authentic is an increasingly controversial task. In this book, Brown addresses this issue in its broadest dimension and participates in the debate on some specific attributions. Contains 449 printed pages of Spanish text with monochrome and colour illustrations, works of art and photographs throughout. In Fine condition, no dust wrapper as issued. Member of the P.B.F.A.
