Picken (illustrator) printed by Day & Son after a drawing by W. L. Leitch. Day & Son became the Queen's most famous early Victorian firm of lithographic printers in London. Paper measures 13'' x 9'' the lithograph being 8'' x 5½''. The hall is in shade, beyond the church tower in sunlight forms the dominant feature of the composition of light and shade. The foreground is full of activity, a man takes charge of two work horses, a cart with double shafts awaits, a boy picks up loaves scattered from his basket, a woman wheels a loaded barrow watched by market women with their wares. All is not strictly business; two soldiers resplendent in regimental kilts and bearskins pass the time fraternising with two market women, urban activity extends into the distance.
