Billy Mayerl Piano Sheet Music: Bats in the Belfry Mayerl, Billy [Joseph William Mayerl May 31st 1902 - March 25th 1959] Austen Croom-Johnson (Book #ID 55038) Published by Keith Prowse & Co. Ltd., 42-43 Poland Street, London 1935. London 1935. Publisher's original colour illustrated period art work paper covers. 12'' x 9½''. Contains 8 printed pages of musical score for the piano. Born in 1902 on London's West End and by the age of 7 he was studying at the Trinity College of Music. By the time Mayerl was 20 he was resident pianist for a Southampton Hotel. It was there that British bandleader and saxophonist Bert Ralton first heard him, and instantly sought to hire him for his Havana Band at London's Savoy Hotel. From 1923 to 1926 Mayerl was a featured soloist with the band in the earliest years of the BBC. In 1926 Mayerl left the Havana band to pursue a solo career in recording and composition. While maintaining a schedule with the BBC, he also toured the UK performing in venues of all sizes, taking time off to create increasingly complex syncopation's for publication. More importantly, he started publishing not just his own works, but some transcriptions of other composer's pieces he had recorded. In the 1930s, Mayerl established a correspondence course 'The Billy Mayerl Club Magazine' for instruction in piano and composition. He spent the war primarily in London, although publishing very little during this time. Once peace had been re-established, Billy renewed his ties with radio. He also took his music to USA and Australasia. A heavy smoker, Billy finally died from a heart attack in 1959 at the tender age of 57. His post-war pieces have a mellow and classical line with a more melancholic composition, along with his unique sound of tenth's and fourth's, albeit wound around with more sophistication, one cannot help wondering what he would have written had he lived into the 1970s. Until the second world war Aiken lived in the Rye district, firstly at Lookout Cottage in Winchelsea, opposite the muddy creek from where the Mackechnie's lived on the Rye side, by February 1924 he had bought Jeake's House in Rye. By the way, Margaret Barnard's sister Alison Mary Barnard was a formidable Lady and networker. She lived at No. 4, Wimpole Mews, London and 'ran' The Centre of Spiritual and Psychological Studies. Here many Peace seeking authors, artists of very different plumage came together including Walter de la Mare, T. S. Eliot, Kathleen Raine, G. K. Chesterton [early on], Laurens van der Post and many more. No doubt Conrad Aiken too, who was a lifelong friend of T. S. Eliot, no outward publicity, quite the opposite of the extrovert Bloomsbury Bohemian hack hub.
