Hard back binding in publisher's original scarlet cloth covers, gilt and black title, author lettering and simple floral design to the spine and to the upper panel. 8vo. 7'' x 5''. Contains [xiv] 128 [ii] printed pages of text with 59 finely detailed monochrome engravings throughout. The last book in the publisher's listings is 'Master Minds in Art, Science and Letters' published in 1886. Dedicated to The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Bands of Mercy were formed in 1875 by philanthropist Catherine Smithies - earlier part of the Wilberforce Anti-Slavery Movement. These youngsters among others, protested outside Smithfield Market, later merged into the R.S.P.C.A. Some external damp staining around the bottom of the spine and onto the rear board, the contents are not affected, light smudge marks to the text block. Member of the P.B.F.A.
