Contains portrait frontispiece, (lv), 553 pp. The author travelled in Africa in 1868-70 and was profoundly affected in his thinking, having to reconstruct his philosophy in the light of his experiences of different races, Christianity and Islam and his acceptance of Darwin's 'Descent of Man'. He retains strong religious convictions and writes wishing to offer the benefit of his synthesis on War, Religion. Liberty and Intellect to others while regarding the greatest benefit of the exercise as to himself. Some staining to the frontispiece and top front corner of the front cover, else in Good condition.
