First de luxe edition hard back binding in publisher's original elaborately decorated white vellum covers stamped in gilt and navy blue, gilt title, author lettering and Egyptian Arabic characters to the spine and to the front cover, top edge gilt, colour illustrated end papers. 4to 11½'' x 9''. Contains [xvi] 286 printed pages of text with 27 very beautiful tipped-in and mounted full-page captioned and paper guarded coloured plates from the paintings of Walter Tyndale. Hand written number 40 of 150 de luxe Limited Edition copies SIGNED by the author below the limitation details 'Walter Tyndale'. The silk tie is missing consequently the front board is slightly sprung, light foxing to the early and last end papers and in Very Good clean and sound condition. Heavy volume. Walter Tyndale was one of the first illustrators to benefit from new developments in colour printing in the early 20th century, which led to a surge in demand for illustrations for travel books. He wrote and illustrated several volumes as well as providing pictures for other authors. His first commission was from Methuen for 'The New Forest' (1904), and work on subsequent books led to him travelling extensively in England, Italy, North Africa, the Middle East and Japan, painting landscapes, street scenes and architecture.
