First edition hard back binding in publisher's original embossed moss green cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt and black front cover, bevelled edges, all page edges gilt, 'Starrs' cream and green floral end sheets. Landscape. 7½'' x 9''. Contains title, additional colour title, red printed dedication leaf, Preface with tipped-in Errata, Table of Contents, followed by 20 hand coloured and highlighted lithographic botanical and zoological plates on triple thick paper, the third sheet into the spine with additional folded piece for binding purposes, the second middle sheet for mounting the first sheet which supports the hand coloured illustration. The Rev. Gleig, in his preface, states the authoress began her sketching in Corfu and continued in Ceylon Sri Lanka. This would correlate with the subjects of her drawings, which include oriental flora and fauna such as butterflies, woodpeckers, Oberonia, Cashu Nut (sic), Walking Green Leaf, Walking Dry Leaf, Stick Insects, Nectarina Birds, Red Bead Vine, Fly Catcher, Nutmeg, Thorn, Bee Bird, Mangosteen, Moth, Loriquet, Vanilla, Klugia, and Air Plant. Each plate is hand coloured and highlighted with gum arabic, with attractive calligraphic poem in brown beneath. Some plates have marginal stains, and some paper discoloration to the verso of the previous plate, one page section slightly skewed, ink message dated 1956 to the verso of the initial title leaf, browning down the spine. Interestingly the Cashew Nut plate mentions that the 'fruit is useless, except for the birds to eat', however, the liquor Kaju | Feni (liquor) is now produced from the fruit. Member of the P.B.F.A.
