Day Gone By; The Tragedy of a Fool + Postcard + Photograph

Barker, Eric Leslie [1912-1990]

(Book #ID 58487)

Published by Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd., Paternoster House, Paternoster Row, London First Edition 1933. London 1933.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original black cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine and the front cover. 8vo 8'' x 5½''. Contains 284 [32 page catalogue dated 1933] printed pages of text. Eric Barker was a prolific script writer and from the age of twenty he was producing three act plays, serious dramas, comedies, poetry and a lyricist for the music of Rex Burrows. He became one of the most famous faces in British comedy and got his start in show business during the Second World War, when he was part of the armed forces radio show 'Merry Go Round'. After the war the show continued and was renamed 'The Waterlogged Spa', with Eric and his wife, Pearl Hackney. The show's success led to Eric starring in other radio shows, where he achieved celebrity status due to his versatility in mimicking voices. By the mid-1950's he had made the move to the big screen, and found his niche in playing variations on the busybody sticking his nose into everyone's business, or, in the case of the 'Carry On' films, the gang's boss or some other authority figure who was usually on the receiving end of their shenanigans, most memorably in 'Carry on Constable' [1960]. Foxing to the page edges, bumps to the spine ends and corners. Near Very Good condition book in superb Fine condition dust wrapper, priced 7/6 to the spine. Dust wrapper without any tears, marks or chips whatsoever, flawless. Included with the book is a promotional post card about the book from Stanley Paul with a photograph of Eric to one side, also included is the original monochrome post card from this post card.
