He was the author of two antiquarian works published after his death: Antiquitates Rutupinae (Antiquities of Richborough) and Antiquitates S. Edmundi Burgi ad Annum MCCLXXII Perductae (Antiquities of Bury St. Edmunds to 1272). John Battely was the brother of Nicholas Battely, who edited William Somner's Cantuaria sacra, the first account of the antiquities of Canterbury.

Large paper edition which contains [xvi] 138 [iv]; [vi] 164 printed pages of Latin text with 4 fold-out maps, 4 fold-out plates, 1 double page plate, 7 single page plates, and 4 vignettes. Bookplate to the front paste, the joints are starting, rubbing to the corners, foxing to the paste downs and half-title leaf, beyond which the text block is in Very Good clean condition.
