The Moscow Kremlin in the Sixteenth Century Illuminated Codex (Litsevoi letopisnyi svod) Moskovskiy Kreml' v illyuminirovannom kodekse XVI veka (Book #ID 107806) Published by Aurora Art Publishers, Leningrad 1987. 1987. Publisher's original triptych card covers containing 16 individual 8¼'' x 6'' images form the Codex with comprehensive details to the reverse of each card in Russian and English, the faces of the images are on coated art paper. The 16th century Illuminated Codex (Litsevoi letopisnyi svod), is one of the celebrated monuments of Russian medieval culture. The Codex comprises nine volumes adorned with sixteen thousand miniatures which give a graphic account of world and Russian history (until 1567), illustrating the literary narration. A considerable number of miniatures present a detailed description of Russia's political events and portray scenes from the family life of the Grand Princes. Over two thousand miniatures are associated with Moscow, for the most part with the Kremlin and its architectural landmarks. Each miniature consists of several pictures. The miniaturists do not aim at portraying the real architecture of the Krelim, they would rather reduce the buildings to mere symbols highlighting their most prominent features to indicate the place of action. However, the churches, civil buildings and defensive structures of the Kremlin are well recognisable in some water-colours. The authentic 16th-century representations of the Moscow Kremlin make the Illuminated Codex an invaluable historical source and as important contribution to Russian art. Card covers marked, cards in Very Good bright condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. Click here to select books from the ART [Russian] Category |
