First edition hard back binding in publisher's original decorated blue covers stamped in gilt, gilt title and author lettering to the spine and to the front cover, top edge gilt, illustrated end papers. 4to 11'' x 9''. Contains [xi] 272 pp with 30 intricate full-page colour plates tipped in to framed mounts with lettered paper guards from the paintings of Walter Tyndale. Walter Tyndale was one of the first illustrators to benefit from new developments in colour printing in the early 20th century, which led to a surge in demand for illustrations for travel books. He wrote and illustrated several volumes as well as providing pictures for other authors. His first commission was from Methuen for 'The New Forest' (1904), and work on subsequent books led to him travelling extensively in England, Italy, North Africa, the Middle East and Japan, painting landscapes, street scenes and architecture. Rubbing to the corners of the boards and across the spine ends, spine dulled. Heavy volume 2.2 kg, extra postage will be requested over and above our default setting for destinations outside the UK.
