Left Book Club Advertisement Leaflet (circa 1939) Sir Victor Gollancz (9 April 1893 - 8 February 1967) was a British publisher and humanitarian | Left Book Club (Book #ID 108732) Published by Victor Gollancz Ltd., 14 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London | Left Book Club circa 1939. 1939. 9'' x 7'' folded Left Book Club advertisement leaflet printed on all four sides opening to 9'' x 14''. The Left Book Club was a publishing group that exerted a strong left-wing influence in Great Britain from 1936 to 1948. Pioneered by Victor Gollancz, it offered a monthly book choice, for sale to members only, as well as a newsletter that acquired the status of a major political magazine. It also held an annual rally. Membership peaked at 57,000, but after the Soviet-Nazi non-aggression pact of 1939, it disowned its large Communist element, and subsequent years of paper-rationing, during and after the war, led to further decline. It ceased publishing in 1948. Alongside the Fabian Society and Transport House, the LBC's popularising of socialist ideas was a major influence behind the Labour victory in the general election of 1945. 'The best publisher alive or dead' C. P. Snow. Folded line across the centre, else in Fine condition. Member of the P.B.F.A.
