Eleanor Vere Boyle (1825-1916) was an artist of the Victorian era whose work consisted mainly of water-colour illustrations in children's books. (Book #ID 100774) Printed by T. Brettell, Rupert Street, Haymarket, London and Published by John Ollivier, 59 Pall Mall, London, First Edition 1848. 1848. Uniform matching first edition hard back binding in contemporary full cross or pin headed grain, or what is now termed 'Turkey Morocco', raised bands with gilt tools and lettering, gilt dentelles, gilt knurled edges, marble page edges and end papers. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Fine bindings of full turkey morocco by William Mansell bindery (James Hayday) one of the finest bookbinders of the day and pioneers in the use of turkey morocco, developed to allow the easier opening of books without straining the hinges. He sold the use of his name to William Mansell, who succeeded to the bookbinding establishment. From the private library of Eleanor Vere Boyle, Huntercombe Manor, with decorative ownership bookplate to each front paste down who signed her works 'EVB' to obscure her identity and who quickly became one of the most important female illustrators in the 1860s. Contains coloured engraved half-titles by Alonso Cano, (xliii)-1, 508; 509-948; 949-1481 (ii) printed pages of text, woodcut illustrations within the text and full page engraved portraits, initial letters printed in red.
