[Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst (or Chalkhurst), commonly known as the Biddenden Maids, were a pair of conjoined twins supposedly born in Biddenden, Kent, in the year 1100] Mary Herbert, Dorothy Sidney, Dorothy Selby. (Book #ID 90163) Published by F. J. Parsons Ltd., Printers, The Bayle, Folkestone. No date but First Edition 1921. 1921. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original strawberry cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine and to the front cover. 8vo. 8½'' x 5½''. A fascinating survey of the 48 most famous historical women of Kent. Contains 110 printed pages of text with portrait frontispiece and 8 other photo monochrome illustrations on silk art paper. Pages 12 and 13 only about the maids who are said to have been joined at both the shoulder and the hip, and to have lived for 34 years. It is claimed that on their death they bequeathed five plots of land to the village, known as the Bread and Cheese Lands. The income from these lands was used to pay for an annual dole of food and drink to the poor every Easter. Since at least 1775 the dole has included Biddenden cakes, hard biscuits imprinted with an image of two conjoined women.
