David Hutcheson Billboard Advertisement Sheet | Poster for Glasgow and the Highlands Steam Boat Service (1870) David Hutcheson & Co., | David MacBrayne Ltd., (Book #ID 107799) Published and Printed by Messrs. Maclure & Macdonald, 20 St. Vincent Place, Glasgow for David Hutcheson & Co., 119 Hope Street, Corner of Bothwell Street, Glasgow 25th July, 1870. 1870. Original double sided billboard advertisement sheet | poster for Glasgow and the Highlands steam boat service 15½'' x 10''. David Hutcheson became a steamboat owner in 1851, when he took over the Western Isles fleet of the George and James Burns shipping empire, of which he was the local manager. His business was the largest of the local operators and came to dominate the area totally, latterly in connection with the railways, but continuing until 1969 with direct services from Glasgow. David MacBrayne was a partner from 1851 in the firm and when the Hutchesons retired in 1879, David MacBrayne, at the age of sixty-five, took over the Company and renamed it. Front side printed in red and blue on thin cream paper with comprehensive details of islands and destinations, the reverse of the sheet shows a map of Scotland printed in black with the title 'Routes of David Hutcheson & Co., Steamers 1870', inset box to the bottom left hand corner details fares for 1870 season for the Swift Steamers, First Class Return Ticket details and fares for 'Clansman' or 'Clydesdale'. The bottom of the front cover states 'Carriages and Horses taken by the Swift Boats, provided there are Persons in charge'. Couple of small pin holes to the folded line down the centre. Incredible 150 year old ephemera from a bygone era, most of which is still relevant today in travelling around the Highlands and Islands. Member of the P.B.F.A.
