The Printed Book | Second Edition Revised and Brought up to Date by John Carter and E. A. [Brooke] Crutchley [Double Signed]

Aldis, Harry G. [Philip was born Philip Henry G. Gosse in Kensington in 1879. His grandfather was the naturalist Philip Henry Gosse 1810-1888]. Revised By John Carter (1905 - 1975) and E. A. [Brooke] Crutchley (1907-2003).

(Book #ID 102716)

Published by University Press, Cambridge, Second Revised Edition 1941. 1941.

Second revised edition hard back binding in publisher's original Farrows cream cloth covers, venetian red title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 7'' x 5''. Contains (vi)-1, [blank], 141 printed pages of text with monochrome illustrations throughout. Very Good condition book in Very Good condition dust wrapper with minor rubbing. Inside the front paste down is a red and black printed label Philip Gosse (1879-1959), son of writer Sir Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928), and grandson of naturalist Philip Henry Gosse (1810-1888). Philip Gosse had two daughters but no sons. He was born on 13th August 1879, so this presentation copy dated 13.8.41, would appear to have been given to Philip Gosse on his 62nd birthday in spite of the facetious reference to his being 21! In any case it bears a 'Philip Gosse' bookplate so is unlikely to have been presented to a cousin etc. (remember there was no son), with exactly the same name and date of birth. This Philip Gosse concerned therefore must have been the writer on piracy, by profession a physician, his collection is now in the Royal Maritime Museum at Greenwich. Double SIGNED by both authors opposite 'Philip Goose' bookplate 'Philip Gosse on his 21st birthday from ye Revisers John Carter and Brooke Crutchley 13th August 1941'.
