Carmen Mérimée, Prosper [Prosper Mérimée (28 September 1803 - 23 September 1870) was a French writer in the movement of Romanticism, and one of the pioneers of the novella]. Illustrated by René Bull (11 December 1872 - 14 March 1942) was a British illustrator and photographer. [Translated by A. E. Johnson]. Georges Bizet (25 October 1838 - 3 June 1875). First edition with these illustrations hard back binding in publisher's original venetian red buckram covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine, gilt theatre drapes and Japanese fan to the front cover, top edge gilt, grey and white silhouette matador illustrated end sheets. 4to. 11'' x 9''. Mérimée is best known for this novella Carmen, which became the basis of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. Contains [ix], 203 printed pages of text with with 16 intricate full-page colour plates with lettered paper guards, and 74 large monochrome illustrations throughout.
