A Discourse Delivered at the Drum Head, on the Fort, Margate, October 19, 1803, the day of the General Fast, Before the Volunteers, Commanded The Right Hon. William Pitt; and also Before the Ministers and Members of the Different Denominations of Protestant Dissenters, who form The East Kent Association, at Folkstone [sic], October 26, and then Addressed to The Volunteers of London and Southwark, Assembled with the Author's own Congregation in Carter Lane, near London Bridge, November 13, 1803. John Rippon (29 April 1751 - 17 December 1836) was an English Baptist minister. In 1787 he published an important hymnal, A Selection of Hymns from the Best Authors, Intended to Be an Appendix to Dr. Watts' Psalms and Hymns, commonly known as Rippon's Selection, which was very successful, and was reprinted 27 times in over 200,000 copies. Many hymns originally published in Rippon's Selection are preserved in the Sacred Harp. [Francis Cobb, 1727-1802, was founder of the family fortunes and was followed by his son Francis jun., 1759-1831. Second edition hard back binding in original full brown diced leather covers, gilt title lettering to the spine, all page edges gilt, lemon end papers. 8vo. 8'' x 5''. Contains [x] 40 printed pages of text. Foxing to the paper throughout, neatly hand written and perfectly legible two page appreciation of 'The Fort' to the front paste down and end paper, note opposite the title page by Arthur Mackie?, name to the title page Ambrose Brackett, the title page is starting to pull away from the text block, 30 mm piece of leather missing to the top of the spine. These are all contained in white folder which was presented with the compliments of the Mayor and Corporation of Margate and has the Coat of Arms in colour to the front cover. All in Fine condition.
