National Shooting Gallery (Belgium) Souvenir of the Civilian Martyrs of the Great War 1914-1918 | Edith Cavell | Gabrielle Petit Edith Louisa Cavell (4 December 1865 - 12 October 1915) was a British nurse and member of La Dame Blanche | Gabrielle Alina Eugenia Maria Petit (20 February 1893 - 1 April 1916) was a Belgian woman who spied for the British Secret Service during World War I. (Book #ID 112365) Published by Belgium George Leclercq 1918. 1918. 6½'' x 4¼'' folding light purple printed card wrap covers (soft back) with wrap around tuck-in flap. Containing 12 original monochrome photographs + 1 loose photograph of Edith Cavell's grave in Norwich. The photographs are corner mounted on light brown card stock being captioned in French, English and Dutch to the rear and marked with the photographers name. Edith Cavell is celebrated for treating wounded soldiers from both sides without discrimination and for covertly helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium and return to active service during the First World War. The interior of the front flap has been repaired at some point in time with scarlet linen tape enabling it to tuck-in securely, else in Very Good clean condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. The text is made up of letters from Second Lieutenant Dinsmore Ely to his family back in Winnetka, Illinois during World War I.
