Desert Fury Janson, Hank [pseudonym of Stephen D. Frances] (Book #ID 41276) Published by Alexander Moring, Ltd., 139 Borough High Street, London circa 1950's. 1950. Publisher's original colour illustrated card covers featuring typical 'pulp fiction' colour art work to the front cover. Hank Janson, a reporter for the Chicago Chronicle, was an invention of the English author Stephen D. Frances. Following the Second World War, pulp fiction and paperbacks were banned from being exported into the UK from America. Consequently, Hank Janson's rather sexual as well as violent adventures filled a huge gap in the British market. During the early 1950s, Frances sold millions of Janson thrillers, up to 4,000 copies a day, but his career would be cut short when in January 1954 twelve jurors sat at the Old Bailey to hear charges of obscenity against seven crime novels. Hank's publisher and distributor were found guilty and imprisoned and an arrest warrant put out for the author. Frances only escaped prosecution by fleeing to Spain. The trial created a new Obscene Publications Act. Frances died in 1989 in relative obscurity, but Steve Holland's The Trials of Hank Janson, published in 2004, was short-listed for the Crime Writers Association Gold Dagger Award for non-fiction. 8vo 7'' x 4¼'' 160 pp. Cheap paper browning to page margins and white card to the spine. Priced 2/6 to the spine, upper and lower covers and in Very Good condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. Click here to select books from the DETECTIVE | CRIME FICTION Category |
