On June 5th 1918 while Great Britain was in the throws of World War One, Thomas Severn, under manager of Mapperley Pit also known as Simon Fields Colliery, in Derbyshire, stepped into a cage at 6am and descended underground into the bowels of the earth to start his working shift. He was last seen entering a slip road at 12.15 pm and he was never seen again. He vanished completely; his body, the map he was carrying and his stick were never found. Contains 139 printed pages of text with monochrome illustrations and archive colour photographs throughout.
