Though broadly unrecognised in his lifetime, he is considered a pioneer of lyrical abstraction, one of the most influential artists of the Tachisme movement. In particular, the oil works of his later phase influenced French and German painters of the Art Informel. Jean-Paul Sartre and other French writers appreciated him as a book illustrator.
