            The Cornhill Magazine No. 34 (New Series) No. 472 April 1899

The Cornhill Magazine (1860-1975) was a monthly Victorian magazine and literary journal named after the street address of the founding publisher Smith, Elder & Co. at 65 Cornhill in London. In the 1860s, under editor William Makepeace Thackeray, the paper saw a large circulation, peaking at around 110,000. Due to emerging competitors, circulation fell to 20,000 by 1870. The following year, Leslie Stephen took over as editor. When Stephen left in 1882, circulation had further fallen to 12,000. The Cornhill was purchased by John Murray in 1912, and continued to publish issues until 1975.

The work is, in part, a parody of Hegel, and of German Idealism more generally, Carlyle had difficulty finding a publisher for the novel, and began composing it as an article in October 1831 in Fraser's serialised Magazine in 1833-1834. The text would first appear in book form in Boston in 1836, its publication arranged by Ralph Waldo Emerson, who much admired the book and also Carlyle. Emerson's savvy dealing with the overseas publishers would ensure Carlyle received high compensation, which the novel did not attain in Britain which was first published in London in 1838. Contains tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece (viii), 308 pp + 32 pp publisher's catalogue dated January 1869. Contains [xii] 415 printed pages of text with many monochrome illustrations by the author throughout. First published in 1843 describing Ireland. L-shaped piece of cloth missing to the top of the spine, rubs across the bottom of the spine which is slightly age darkened, old ink name inside, the contents being in Very Good clean condition.
