The Girdle of Venus | A Play in Four Acts + Signed Letter Salzman, L. F. [Louis Francis Salzman CBE (26 March 1878 - 4 April 1971) was a British economic historian who specialised in the medieval period]. Stage Settings Designed by George Kruger Gray [George Kruger Gray (25 December 1880 - 2 May 1943) was an English artist, best remembered for his designs of coinage and stained glass windows]. (Book #ID 95572) Published by W. Heffer & Sons Ltd., Cambridge First Edition 1922. 1922. First edition in publisher's original green card wrap covers over stiff cream card covers [soft back], cream paper label to the front cover. 8vo. 7½'' x 5''. Contains 74 page play with four illustrations [one to each act], by George Kruger Gray. Small chips to the over lapping edges of the card covers and in Very Good condition. Loosely enclosed is a double sided letter from the author's private residence in Lewes, East Sussex, dated 3rd June 1946 'Dear Marion [at this point you look hastily at the signature to see who is being so damned familiar]. It has been suggested to me that you have useful contacts with the Film World and might be able to help me to persuade someone to pay me vast sums for the right to make another of 'the screen's most spectacular productions'. I don't know whether you ever saw, or knew that I had perpetrated a play - 'The Girdle of Venus'. Terence Gray tottered on the brink of producing it at the M. Festival, but unfortunately saved himself. It would make a really remarkably good film [much better than play]. So if you can pull the right strings and find someone to produce it, it should bring pleasure to millions of beholders (the more the merrier!) and, quite incidentally, profit to me and even a rake-off to you. Anyhow, here it is and other copies are available if required. I hope you are flourishing. It would be pleasant, for me at any rate, if we could meet sometime in Town. I go up most weeks for days, but shall emphatically not be up for V-Day celebrations, and go on holiday from 16th June to about 10th July. Yours sincerely, L. F. Salzman'. Member of the P.B.F.A.
