A Reader in Edo Period Travel Plutschow, Herbert [Kaibara Ekiken (1630-1714) Matsuura Takeshiro (1818-1888)]. (Book #ID 82874) Published by Global Oriental Ltd., Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2006. 2006. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original black cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 10'' x 7¼''. Largely ignored hitherto by Western scholars, Plutschow's Edo Period Travel provides the first in-depth study of the subject which is centred on fifteen of the period's most notable travellers, some of whom are well known in other fields - as intellectuals, artists, poets, folklorists and natural scientists, for example - but rarely, if at all, as travellers. The first traveller put in the spotlight is the celebrated intellectual and botanist Kaibara Ekiken (1630-1714) and the last is the explorer of Ezo (now Hokkaido) and government official Matsuura Takeshiro (1818-1888). Such was the thirst for knowledge in the Edo period that some travel accounts (estimated to number over 2000) became best-sellers in their day, not least for their voyeuristic appeal, including those of Kaibara Ekiken and Tachibana Nankei, which are included in this volume. This important research on how the Japanese discovered their own country and cultural identity has considerable interdisciplinary appeal. Of particular interest also is the author's discussion on the nature of this new travel writing and the self-centred observation and seeing that developed in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, he calls the 'Japanese Enlightenment'. The Orientation of Science and Technology; A Japanese View [Collected Papers of Twentieth Century Japanese Writers on Japan Volume 3] Nakayama, Shigeru [Foreword by Tessa Morris-Suzuki] (Book #ID 82882) Published by Global Oriental, Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2009. 2009. Contains [xxii] 390 printed pages of text with monochrome frontispiece. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, unused and unopened new book. Shigeru Nakayama, One of the most distinguished science historians of the twentieth century, Shigeru Nakayama has been at the forefront of redirecting or 'reorientating' conventional East Asian science and technology, arguing, like Joseph Needham, that the 'orientation of science' refers not only to the direction of science but also implies a turning to Eastern science. In recent times, he has been arguing for implementation of a 'Service Science',which is linked to the rights and needs ofmankind. A survivor of theHiroshima atomic bomb, he majored in astrophysics at the University of Tokyo and wrote on the history of astronomy for his PhD and later on the history of science for his Harvard Ph.D. We carry this book in stock for immediate dispatch. Nagasaki | The British Experience, 1854-1945 Burke-Gaffney, Brian [Thomas Blake Glover (6 June 1838 - 16 December 1911) was a Scottish merchant in the Bakumatsu and Meiji period in Japan]. (Book #ID 85301) Published by Global Oriental Ltd., Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2009. 2009. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original navy cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Nagasaki is something of an outlier in Japanese history. While the country closed itself off from external influence between the 1630s and 1853, this western port remained partially exempt, a crack through which people, ideas and products could pass. Today, the city retains its cosmopolitan attitude and atmosphere. Brian Burke-Gaffney's study focuses on what he calls 'the British century' in Nagasaki, when Japan opened up and the city became a focal point for adventurous foreigners, among whom Brits were prominent. The study moves both chronologically and thematically through the period, examining political, economic and social interactions between the immigrant communities and locals. Burke-Gaffney, a Canadian scholar who has lived in Nagasaki since 1982, does an exemplary job of balancing the narrative. The bulk of the tale is taken up with 1880 to 1905, when Nagasaki thrived and bustled. His prose is imbued with an obvious love for the port and its people, and the story whips along. Personalities loom large, none more so than Thomas Glover, that whirlwind of Scottish industry who had a hand in much of the excitement and expansion during this time. Though the book ends with the dropping of the atomic bomb on August 9, 1945, the Nagasaki of today is vibrant, packed with gripping history and colourful life, and a must-visit on everyone's itinerary. Okakura Tenshin and Pan-Asianism | Shadows of the Past Tankha, Brij [Okakura Tenshin 1862-1913] (Book #ID 83226) Published by Global Oriental Ltd., Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2009. 2009. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original blue cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. This volume explores four key themes emanating from Okakura Tenshin's philosophy and legacy: Okakura Tenshin and the Ideal of Pan-Asianism; Other Forms of Pan-Asianism (especially Islam and China); Art and Asia, and Ways of Defining Asia (up to the present day). Okakura Tenshin (1862-1913), art historian and ideologue driven by a notion of Asia bound by culture, is a significant figure in Japan's modern intellectual history. His writings in both Japanese and English became part of a growing discourse that positioned Japan as the guardian and protector of Asia against the depredations, cultural as much as economic and political, of the West. At the outbreak of the Pacific War, the first line of Okakura's 1903 book ('Asia is One'), The Ideals of the East, was celebrated posthumously by the Japanese military as the most powerful expression of Japan's goal of political ascendancy in Asia. Reporting the Russo-Japanese War,1904-5 | Lionel James's First Wireless Transmission to ''The Times'' Slattery, Peter [Lionel James] (Book #ID 83231) Published by Global Oriental Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2004. 2004. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original green cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 5½''. Contains [xvi] 144 printed pages of text with monochrome photographs. Lionel James's First Wireless Transmission to the "Times", Peter Slattery, Large numbers of British military and naval officers as well as journalists and others observed the Russo-Japanese War from close quarters. But there was one journalist in particular, the "Times"' correspondent, Lionel James, who made war-reporting history by gaining access to the conflict zone of the war at sea and reporting by wireless from a specially chartered ship as the action happened. The full details of this remarkable and highly dangerous exploit have been carefully pieced together from official "Times" records and other sources by Peter Slattery and recorded here for the first time, including the story of how the vital 180-foot timber wireless mast was built on the British-leased tree-less promontory of Weihaiwei on the China coast. James' first report was published in "The Times" on 15 March 1904; he subsequently went on to file many other dispatches, including the sinking of the Russian flag-ship the Petropavlovsk. The World Powers, however, were not ready to accept that a mere journalist should be allowed to exploit the new wireless technology to gain reporting advantage and forced James to give up, causing him to move inland into Manchuria to continue his reporting of the war. From there, he was to send a 5000-word story on one of the major land battles of the war at Liaoyang - the longest cable ever filed. There was also the matter of James' special deal with the Japanese Imperial Navy, which only now has come to light. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, unused and unopened new book. Japanese Propaganda: Selected Readings Series 1: Books 1872-1943 A Collection in Ten Volumes [10 Volumes Complete] O'Connor, Peter [Series Editor] Musashino University, Tokyo (Book #ID 83413) Published by Global Oriental, Folkestone, Kent First Thus Edition 2004. 10 Volumes. Folkestone 2004. Uniform matching first edition hard back binding in publisher's original scarlet covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spines. Quarto 10'' x 7''. Given today's heightened interest in the role and processes of propaganda in global realpolitik, the arrival of this first major collection of English-language writings on Japan and international ambitions in the modern period - a source long neglected by historians and social scientists alike - is both timely and relevant. Most books on Japan published in English between Meiji and the Pacific War can be divided between those with an explanatory purpose and those with a more critical focus. In the West, in the early years of the 20th century, explanatory books and fiction on Japan, especially those by Japanese authors, enjoyed a wide readership. A number of these explanatory volumes were propagandist in intent and by definition. However, as books about Japan with a more Western outlook came into vogue, the earlier volumes were gradually superseded by new works, written by Western writers and journalists, many of whom were subsidized by the Japanese government. In 1921, on the eve of the Washington Conference, Japan established a propaganda bureau within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and contracted with Western authors based in East Asia and elsewhere to support and contribute to her international agenda. A selection of the fruits of these and earlier endeavours has been brought together in this collection. Japanese Propaganda - Selected Readings stands as a record of Japan s responses to international criticism and of her sustained effort to win international favour during the stormiest years of her modern history. With a foreword from Uchikawa Yoshimi, the dean of Japanese media historians, a comprehensive introduction by Series Editor, Peter O'Connor, and scholarly introductions to each volume, Japanese Propaganda - Selected Readings provides a rich resource for all students of Japan's modern drive for international acceptance, and of her pre-war retreat into national victimhood and institutionalized mysticism. Shock And Naturalization in Contemporary Japanese Literature Cassegard, Carl [Kawabata Yasunari, Abe Kobo, Murakami Haruki and Murakami Ryu]. (Book #ID 83928) Published by Global Oriental Ltd., Folkestone, Kent First Edition 2007. 2007. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original sea blue cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. This study introduces the concepts of naturalization and naturalized modernity, and uses them as tools for understanding the way modernity has been experienced and portrayed in Japanese literature since the end of the Second World War. Special emphasis is given to four leading post-war writers - Kawabata Yasunari, Abe Kobo, Murakami Haruki and Murakami Ryu. The author argues that notions of 'shock' in modern city life in Japan (as exemplified in the writings of Walter Benjamin and George Simmel), while present in the work of older Japanese writers, do not appear to hold true in much contemporary Japanese literature: it is as if the 'shock' impact of change has evolved as a 'naturalized' or 'Japanized' process. The author focuses on the implications of this phenomenon, both in the context of the theory of modernity and as an opportunity to re-evaluate the works of his chosen writers.
