Historical Subjects on Tiles | By Noted Artist John Gould | No. 20: Bannermans Castle Gould, John [John Fleming Gould (1906-1996) was an American painter, illustrator, and art instructor] (Book #ID 106674) Produced by Bethlehem Art Gallery, Inc. Jackson Avenue, Newburgh, New York. John Gould established the Bethlehem Art Gallery and Art School in 1957 in New York. He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and studied art at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York and later instructed at Pratt for 22 years. He was a prominent illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post for more than eight years and an illustrator for many national corporations. Ceramic tile hand painted tile comes in original 6½'' x 6½' box' with information about the artist. The scene is the famous Scottish like 'Castle' situated on Pollepel Island, called Bannerman's Island Arsenal. Opposite Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, it was started in 1900 by the world renowned dealer in military equipment, Francis Bannerman, to house his vast collection of war relics and antiques. Pollepel Island was also made famous in the revolutionary war because of the gigantic 'Chevaux de Frise', under water structure strung from the island to plum point to blockade British warships. Tile signed by artist John Gould, the rear with cork protection and wall hanging facility or for use as a coaster, trivet, table top, fireplace decoration.
