Roman Roads in the South-East Midlands

Viatores, The [D. E. Johnston; C. Morris; E. V. Parrott; I. D. Margary; R. H. Reid; R. W. Bagshawe; D. B. Baker; C. W. Green; and G. R. Elvey] With a Foreword by Ivan Donald Margary.

(Book #ID 105896)

Published by Victor Gollancz Ltd., 14 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London First Edition 1964. 1964.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original blue cloth effect covered boards, gilt back. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Though outdated in many respects, Ivan D. Margary's Roman Roads in Britain remains the standard work for British road-hunters, thanks not least to the numbering system for Roman roads which it introduced. Margary's approach was morphological, taking the physical appearance of the road - especially its straight alignment - as the point of departure. His method was taken up by a group of enthusiasts calling themselves the Viatores (glossed as 'road surveyors' on p. 121, but Latin viator means 'traveller') who produced this volume on Roman Roads in the South- East Midlands. They succeeded in reconstructing a dense network of Roman roads within their region, but their results were later called into question by Angela Simco, who pointed out that many linear features cited as evidence of Roman origin were in fact created during the Enclosures of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Contains 526 pp with 17 monochrome photographs, 145 pages of maps, 19 pages of section-diagrams. Very Good condition book in Very Good condition dust wrapper with one small tide mark to the bottom of the spine, not price clipped, 70/-. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection.
