Raynal, F. É. [François Édouard Raynal (1830-1898) was a French sailor best known for his involvement in the Grafton shipwreck (1863-1865) at the Auckland Islands. He wrote this popular account of the voyage, Les Naufragés, ou Vingt mois sur un récif des îles Auckland which was translated into English as Wrecked on a Reef. [Woodcuts Drawn by A. de Neuville].

The 2003 English edition of Wrecked On A Reef (1869) has additional appendices by French scholar Dr Christiane Mortelier who presents a case for the influence of Raynal's book on Jules Verne's 'The Mysterious Island'. Wrecked On A Reef was very popular at the time of publication, being translated into multiple languages. According to Mortelier, Verne read Raynal's account and loosely based his novel on the true life story of shipwreck, survival, privation, and ultimate rescue. Contains tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece; [viii]; double page map, 374 printed pages of French text with 40 full-page single-sided woodcuts drawn by A. de Neuville. The famous memoirs of Madame Roland, recognized as one of the most remarkable autobiographies of the period of the Revolution. Marie-Jeanne 'Manon' Phlipon was married to the minister of the interior in the Girondist government Jean Marie Roland, and also on her own account a central figure in the Girondist party. She was arrested in May 1793 after the fall of the Girondists and executed in November the same year. Her memoirs were written during these five months of imprisonment, and posthumously published by her friend L. A. G. Bosc. Soilng to the covers and page edges, dusty end papers.
