The author was the navigator in a Beaufort of No 217 Squadron which was shot down during the hunt for the Scharnhorst. He survived the crash, but was picked up by a German ship, and was soon incarcerated as POW. As an artist, he quickly became a forger of escape documents - and produced colour sketches, some of which are reproduced here. Wright was an important figure in avant-garde cultural circles in pre-World War I New York, and under the pseudonym (which he originally used to conceal his identity) he created the immensely popular fictional detective Philo Vance, a sleuth and aesthete who first appeared in books in the 1920s, then in movies and on the radio.
