A Book of Good Wishes To Mr. Scotcher From the Staff of Lipton (Wholesale and Retail) Limited 26th April 1951.

Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton, 1st Baronet, KCVO (10 May 1848 - 2 October 1931) was a Scotsman of Irish parentage who was a self-made man, merchant, and yachtsman. [Directors R. P. Spink, H. F. May, C. H. Lovell]

(Book #ID 96776)

Printed 26th April 1951. 1951.

Hard back binding in original full green leather, five raised bands to the spine with gilt decorations, elaborate gilt tooling to the the front and rear boards, Lipton 'L', gilt dentelles, all page edges, raised silk end papers. 8vo. 9½'' x 7½''. In 1870 Thomas Lipton initially helped his parents run their small shop in the Gorbals. The following year he opened his first provision shop 'Lipton's Market' at 101 Stobcross Street in the Anderston area of Glasgow. This enterprise proved to be successful and Lipton soon established a chain of groceries, first across Glasgow, the rest of Scotland, until finally he had stores throughout Britain. While Lipton was expanding his empire, tea prices were falling and demand was growing among his middle class customers. In 1880, Lipton invested in the young stockyards of Omaha, Nebraska, founding a large packing plant in South Omaha which he sold to American interests in 1887. In 1888, when his empire had grown to 300 stores, he entered the tea trade and opened his tea-tasting office. He started bypassing traditional trading and wholesale distribution channels (most UK tea-trading was focused in London's Mincing Lane) in order to sell teas at unprecedented prices to the untapped poor working class market. In order to provide his shops with goods Lipton bought tea gardens and in doing so, he established the Lipton tea brand, which remains in business as a subsidiary of Unilever. A presentation retirement book to Mr. Scotcher for services rendered to the Lipton brand, who joined the company in 1936 and was presented this book on his retirement in 1951. Hand written in gold and black with lovely hand drawn colour illustrations by R. Barrett. First page reads 'The purposes of this book, Mr. Scotcher, are manifold. It is written to you, and about you, and, it tries to tell you what all of us in the Lipton business feel about you'. In Fine condition. Member of the P.B.F.A.

Billy Mayerl Piano Sheet Music: Bats in the Belfry

Mayerl, Billy [Joseph William Mayerl May 31st 1902 - March 25th 1959] Austen Croom-Johnson

(Book #ID 55038)

Published by Keith Prowse & Co. Ltd., 42-43 Poland Street, London 1935. London 1935.

Publisher's original colour illustrated period art work paper covers. 12'' x 9½''. Contains 8 printed pages of musical score for the piano. Born in 1902 on London's West End and by the age of 7 he was studying at the Trinity College of Music. By the time Mayerl was 20 he was resident pianist for a Southampton Hotel. It was there that British bandleader and saxophonist Bert Ralton first heard him, and instantly sought to hire him for his Havana Band at London's Savoy Hotel. From 1923 to 1926 Mayerl was a featured soloist with the band in the earliest years of the BBC. In 1926 Mayerl left the Havana band to pursue a solo career in recording and composition. While maintaining a schedule with the BBC, he also toured the UK performing in venues of all sizes, taking time off to create increasingly complex syncopation's for publication. More importantly, he started publishing not just his own works, but some transcriptions of other composer's pieces he had recorded. In the 1930s, Mayerl established a correspondence course 'The Billy Mayerl Club Magazine' for instruction in piano and composition. He spent the war primarily in London, although publishing very little during this time. Once peace had been re-established, Billy renewed his ties with radio. He also took his music to USA and Australasia. A heavy smoker, Billy finally died from a heart attack in 1959 at the tender age of 57. His post-war pieces have a mellow and classical line with a more melancholic composition, along with his unique sound of tenth's and fourth's, albeit wound around with more sophistication, one cannot help wondering what he would have written had he lived into the 1970s. Neat internal tape repaired tear to the spine ends and in Very Good clean condition. We currently hold in stock 65 other titles by Billy Mayerl. Member of the P.B.F.A.
