Here many Peace seeking authors, artists of very different plumage came together including Walter de la Mare, T. S. Eliot, Kathleen Raine, G. K. Chesterton [early on], Laurens van der Post and many more. No doubt Conrad Aiken too, who was a lifelong friend of T. S. Eliot, no outward publicity, quite the opposite of the extrovert Bloomsbury Bohemian hack hub. Signed 8½'' x 5½'' 1 sheet folded poem printed in red and black; 'With all the good wishes of this Holiday Season Conrad & Mary Aiken' on front, with Aiken's 21-lined poem, 'The Fluteplayer' on the inside. On the rear cover is a 26 line hand typed letter to Bobby and Margaret Mackechnie, giving them a glimpse of his and his wife Mary's life, including the risk of being evicted from his Cape Cod farm house. It is typed with uncorrected typos. Conrad Aiken's residence 312 South Capitol Street, Washington 3 D C. Starts: 'Boxing Day - Dear Bobby and Margaret, Good to have your letter, and all the geographical newses, sounds like fine international fun - and delighted to hear Bobby is at work again. And yes, I think it would be a good thing to try the parties again, but alas, the mss [manuscript] is locked away goodness knows where in our Cape Cod attic, and will therefor [sic] be inaccessible till May or so, even if then we can find it! I'm orful [sic] sorry. And hope you can get someone to copy it at lowered rates. In Hastings? What's this about Lamb House, and how would we apply? No news here as to date of eviction or compensation, so we plan to stay on as long as poss.' etc. etc. and ends 'this is a little hand printed job done for us when we judged a potry [sic] reading contest last spring, Conrad'. First edition in publisher's original yapped Islamic green reversed calf covers over thin card, gilt title lettering and floral motif to the front, three colour Persian style patterned end sheets, top edge gilt. 4to. 11¼'' x 8''. Printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd., Lithographers, London. Rubáiyát over unnumbered pages carrying the 75 quatrains of Edward FitzGerald's version enriched with 24 full-page single-sided colour plates mounted upon a suitable paper within a plate marked impression. The poem has been printed throughout in different colour Arabic calligraphic font with art nouveau style surround. The colour scheme suggests Eastern inspiration and the artist has specially studied to reproduce the spirit of the Poem, and he has been assisted throughout by a competent Orientalist, a pupil of Professor Vambery. Age darkening down the spine and to the edges with small losses of leather to the spine ends and across the corners, contents in Very Good clean condition, original glassine dust wrapper with losses loosely inserted. Hard back copy binding in publisher's original quarter white cloth with cream paper title and author lettering label to the spine, steel blue paper covered boards, all page edges untrimmed. 8vo. 8'' x 5¼''. The engravings measure 4½'' x 3½''. Illustrations of the Book of Job primarily refers to a series of twenty-two engraved prints (published 1826) by Blake illustrating the biblical Book of Job. It also refers to two earlier sets of watercolours by Blake on the same subject (1806 and 1821). The engraved Illustrations are considered to be Blake's greatest masterpieces in the medium of engraving, and were also a rare commercial and critical success for Blake. Red and black title page stating 'A New Edition'. This issue is reproduced in reduced facsimile from the original Edition published by William Blake in the year 1826. Contains 22 single-sided tissue-guarded monochrome etchings on India paper mounted on handmade paper, each stating 'Proof' to the bottom right hand corner. From the library of J. H.
