(Book #ID 101802)

Published by Macmillan Co. Ltd., London and The Macmillan Company, New York 1907. 1907.

This lovely contemporary, ornately gilt and inlaid scarlet morocco binding by John Ramage features covers with a wide and very intricately gilt frame bordered by plain and dotted rules, the frame of alternating inlaid green and brown morocco (the former pyramid shapes, the latter strapwork quatrefoils), the whole densely tooled in gilt, central panel with floral cornerpieces, raised bands, spine lavishly gilt with the quatrefoils repeated as centerpieces against a ground of many small tools, turns-ins attractively gilt, ivory watered silk end sheets, all edges gilt. 12mo. 6'' x 4''. Rubáiyát over 111 pages carrying the 75 quatrains of Edward FitzGerald's version. Born in London in 1836, John Ramage served an apprenticeship with John Wright, then went to Paris, where he was able to work with the distinguished Marcellin Lortic (1822-1892), who opened his shop on the Rue St. Honoré in 1840. In 1860 Ramage returned to Britain and purchased the Edinburgh business of Alexander Banks Jnr., stating in the 1861 census returns that he employed 8 men, 3 boys, 6 women and 1 girl. Three years later he moved his business to London, where there was more work. He moved to larger premises in Warwick Lane in 1870, and from there he went to Warwick Square and in 1891 to Creed Lane. After his death in 1911, W. D. and N. M. Ramage, whose names appear in the London Directory for 1918, continued the work of the firm, disappearing after 1929, presumably victims of the slump following the stock market crash in New York that year. SIGNED by the author to the front free end paper 'For Margaret and Bobby with love and belated Christmas wishes from Mary and Conrad'. Third wife Mary Hoover 1937. Robert Mackechnie [Bobby] and Margaret Mackechnie [nee Barnard] English painter friends of Conrad Aiken. Until the second world war Aiken lived in the Rye district, firstly at Lookout Cottage in Winchelsea, opposite the muddy creek from where the Mackechnie's lived on the Rye side, by February 1924 he had bought Jeake's House in Rye. By the way, Margaret Barnard's sister Alison Mary Barnard was a formidable Lady and networker. She lived at No. 4, Wimpole Mews, London and 'ran' The Centre of Spiritual and Psychological Studies. Here many Peace seeking authors, artists of very different plumage came together including Walter de la Mare, T. S. Eliot, Kathleen Raine, G. K. Chesterton [early on], Laurens van der Post and many more. No doubt Conrad Aiken too, who was a lifelong friend of T. S. Eliot, no outward publicity, quite the opposite of the extrovert Bloomsbury Bohemian hack hub.
