Williams, A. M.

(Book #ID 96794)

Published by John Thornton, 7 Princes Street, Hanover Square, London First Edition 1881. 1881.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original brick red paper covered boards, maroon cloth spine, gilt title, author lettering and symmetrical gilt ruled line with fleur-de-lis tools in the corners to the front cover, original lemon end papers, all page edges gilt. Landscape 9¾'' x 15¼''. The Shorthorn breed of cattle originated in the North East of England in the late 18th century, it was developed as dual-purpose, suitable for both dairy and beef production; however, certain blood lines within the breed always emphasised one quality or the other. Over time, these different lines diverged, and by the second half of the 20th century, two separate breeds had developed – the Beef Shorthorn, and the Milking Shorthorn. All Shorthorn cattle are coloured red, white, or roan, although roan cattle are preferred by some, and completely white animals are not common. However, one type of Shorthorn has been bred to be consistently white - the Whitebred Shorthorn, which was developed to cross with black Galloway cattle to produce a popular blue roan crossbreed, the Blue Grey. Contains title page, introduction by the author, List of Etchings, 15 single-sided full-page etched plates on thick card stock all with paper guards, title and details of each etching to the reverse on an additional leaf between every plate. Fountain ink message to the top corner of the front free end paper 'Bought at the Farmers Red Cross Sale, Watford, November 1st 1916, given to Ethel by her father. The sale realized £500.00.' Light surface marks to the edges of the front board, without any foxing or age toning to the paper or the plates. In Very Good clean condition. Member of the P.B.F.A.
